Signage Red Flags: 7 Things to Look for in Your Current Setup

Signage Red Flags: 7 Things to Look for in Your Current Setup

When was the last time you really looked at your signage?

Not glanced at it. Not walked past it. Actually looked at it – the kind of critical inspection you’d give a storefront if you were a customer seeing it for the first time.

If your signage is doing its job, it’s working quietly in the background – guiding, reassuring, making you look the part. But when something’s off, even slightly, it sends a very different message.

Here are 7 red flags we see all the time. Spotting just one or two of these might mean it’s time to rethink your setup.

1. Faded or Weather-Damaged Signage

Problem: UV exposure, moisture, and time take their toll. You end up with sun-bleached colours, peeling vinyl, rusting fixings or cracked acrylic.

Impact: It makes your brand look tired. Neglected signage implies a neglected business – even if the service inside is top-notch.

Fix: Use materials suited to their environment (marine-grade aluminium, anti-fade inks, protective laminates). Butler also offers anti-graffiti coatings and weather-resistant finishes that extend life and keep things sharp.

2. Inconsistent Branding Across Signs

Problem: Your exterior signage is one colour, your internal directional signage another, and the logo on reception is two versions out of date.

Impact: Inconsistency chips away at trust. It creates friction – even if people can’t put their finger on why it feels “off.”

Fix: A signage audit and refresh. We’ll help you identify off-brand assets and create a consistent visual language across all signs – fonts, colours, materials and finishes.

3. Poor Legibility or Bad Placement

Problem: The logo’s too small. The font’s too thin. The sign’s mounted too high, hidden behind a tree, or half in shadow.

Impact: People miss your sign. Worse, they struggle to navigate your space – especially in education, healthcare or retail.

Fix: We assess every sign based on real-world conditions: distance, viewing angles, lighting, traffic flow. Then we design for readability first, not just aesthetics.

4. Material Isn’t Just a Finish - It’s Part of the Design

Problem: Your sign still says “Now Open,” but you’ve been trading for five years. Or it directs people to a side entrance you closed three office refits ago.

Impact: It confuses people, creates friction, and undermines credibility.

Fix: Use modular signage where key messages (like directional arrows, opening hours, QR codes etc.) can be updated without reprinting everything. Better yet, plan for seasonal or campaign-based overlays during production.

5. DIY Fixes and Add-Ons

Problem: Handwritten A4 notices Blu Tacked to a reception desk. A laminated printout in a retail window. A broken menu board with duct tape holding up the corner.

Impact: You might be sending the right information – but the wrong message.

Fix: Butler can produce simple, professional print or vinyl updates quickly – including adhesive overlays, slot-in panels, and temporary solutions that don’t look temporary.

6. Signs That Blend In (or Get Ignored)

Problem: Some signs are too subtle. They match the wall a little too well, or use colours and fonts that vanish under strip lighting.

Impact: If people don’t notice your sign, it’s not doing its job. You lose out on engagement, navigation or branding opportunities.

Fix: We use high-contrast layouts, smart positioning, and tactile or 3D elements to increase visibility – without shouting. Illumination can make a huge difference here, too.

7. Signs That Don’t Reflect Who You Are Anymore

Problem: Your business has moved on – new positioning, a brand refresh, a changed client base – but your signage hasn’t.

Impact: Outdated signage creates a disconnect. It can make your offering feel old or irrelevant, even when the product or service is spot on.

Fix: Time for a rethink. A new logo wall, a fresh set of directional signs, or updated hoarding can help you align your physical presence with your brand’s evolution.

So, What Does Your Signage Say Right Now?

If any of these red flags feel familiar, you’re not alone. These issues crop up over time – and they’re exactly what we’re here to solve.

At Butler, we help businesses, schools, developers and agencies spot weak points in their signage and fix them – fast. Whether you need a simple update or a full audit and rollout, we’ve got the experience, the kit and the people to make it happen.

Don’t Let Bad Signage Be the First Impression

Your signage is often the first thing people see. Make sure it reflects the business you actually are – not the version from five years ago.
