Understanding Image Resolution for Large-Format Print

Why Resolution Matters in Signage

Ever walked past a shopfront where the logo looked just a little… fuzzy? Or spotted a hoarding where the smiling faces seemed oddly pixelated up close? Those moments can undermine the professionalism of even the strongest brand.

When it comes to signage, first impressions aren’t made by what you say – they’re made by what people see. Image resolution is one of the most common, yet misunderstood, aspects of large-format printing. At Butler, we’ve seen how a solid understanding of resolution can make the difference between a sign that impresses and one that disappoints.

In this guide, we’ll break down what resolution really means, why it matters for large-scale signage, and how to get it right every time.

What “Resolution” Actually Means

Let’s start with the basics. Every digital image is made up of thousands – or millions – of tiny coloured squares called pixels. The more pixels an image has, the more detail it can display.

In print, resolution is typically measured in DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch). The higher the number, the sharper the printed result – up to a point.

Here’s the crucial part: screen resolution and print resolution aren’t the same thing. An image that looks crisp on your laptop (often just 72 DPI) may look blurry when printed at full size on a shopfront graphic. Think of it like inflating a small photo onto a billboard – those same pixels are suddenly stretched across a much larger space.

Why Large-Format Printing Is Different

Unlike brochures or flyers, large signage is rarely viewed up close. A billboard, building wrap or retail fascia might be read from several metres away. This means you don’t always need ultra-high resolution – you need the right resolution for the viewing distance.

As a general rule:

At Butler, we tailor our specifications to the environment.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Here are a few pitfalls we often see – and how to sidestep them:

  1. Using web images for print.
Most online images are just 72 DPI. They’re fine for screens, but too low-quality for large-scale print.

  2. Upscaling small images.
Increasing the dimensions of a low-resolution image doesn’t add detail; it just magnifies the blur. Always start with a high-res original.

  3. Forgetting bleed and safe areas.
Allowing extra image around the edges (the “bleed”) ensures a clean trim and prevents key details from being cut off.

  4. Ignoring file formats.
JPEGs are raster images and can lose quality when resized. Vector formats (AI, EPS, PDF) scale infinitely without losing sharpness – ideal for logos and text.

The fix? Check your image specs before you start designing, not after. Our project managers at Butler always review assets early in the process to save clients both time and reprint costs.

Choosing the Right File Type and Format

There are two main image types in signage design:

  • Raster images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF): made up of pixels. Great for photos, but size-sensitive.

  • Vector images (AI, EPS, PDF): made up of mathematical paths. Perfect for logos, icons, and text, because they can scale to any size without losing clarity.

If you’re combining the two – say, a photographic background with a vector logo – make sure your final artwork is exported at the correct dimensions and resolution for print. Our in-house design team routinely checks every file to ensure flawless scaling.

How Butler Ensures Perfect Print Quality

Every project goes through a meticulous process:

  1. Design review and preflight checks – verifying resolution, colour profiles, and dimensions.

  2. Proofing and client sign-off – giving you a clear preview of exactly how your signage will appear.

  3. In-house production – using industry-leading technology for accurate, vibrant results.

  4. Quality control – every sign is inspected before it leaves the workshop.

It’s part of our ethos: Over Delivery as Standard. From concept to installation, we ensure that every pixel performs perfectly.

Butler’s Quick Resolution Checklist

Before you send any artwork to print, run through this list:

  • Confirm image DPI and physical size
  • Use vector files for logos and text
  • Match resolution to the viewing distance
  • Avoid upscaling small images
  • Always proof your artwork before production

Clarity Builds Confidence

Your signage is often your audience’s first physical interaction with your brand. When it’s crisp, vibrant, and professionally printed, it tells customers you care about quality and detail.

At Butler, we help brands across retail, property, education and corporate sectors achieve that level of clarity every time.

If you’re planning a new signage rollout – or simply want to ensure your next project looks as sharp as your brand deserves – our design and production experts are ready to help.
