Rejuvenating Legoland's Fire Academy with Durability and Creativity
The Brief
Butler was contracted by Vokins Construction to undertake the redevelopment of Legoland’s Fire Academy frontage. The existing frontage, constructed with timber, had succumbed to dilapidation, warping, peeling paint, and rot.
Our mission was clear: to remove the decaying structure and replace it with a new frontage that not only boasted exceptional durability but also embodied the spirit of the beloved Lego brand— vibrant, engaging, and undeniably fun.
“A new frontage that not only boasted exceptional durability but also embodied the spirit of the beloved Lego brand...”
Designing for Aesthetics & Durability
The primary challenge for Butler was to identify a substrate that could withstand the constant spray from the water cannons, durability and resistance to chlorine were key. After careful consideration, aluminium composite (ACM) emerged as the ideal choice.
ACM offered a range of benefits such as weather resistance, strength, durability, and availability in vibrant primary colours, perfectly suited to the Lego theme.
Additionally, the flexibility of machining allowed for the replication of intricate details like doors, windows, and lintels.
Precision & Creativity in the Planning Stage
Butler’s experienced surveyors thoroughly inspected the site, capturing precise measurements and evaluating the existing steel framework.
The CAD team utilised these measurements to create detailed drawings and identified key areas for additional structural support.
The frontage specification involved cladding the framework with ACM sign trays, intricate details like doors and windows would also be reproduced as trays and mounted to the face. This approach offered enhanced rigidity, secret fixings, and a watertight finish.
The design team ensured that the overall aesthetic mimicked the iconic Lego look, with square and blocky edges and vibrant primary colours. The meticulous design process included millimetre-perfect cladding trays, decorative trays, and 3D renders for client approval.
Translating Design into Reality with Expert Craftsmanship
Butler’s manufacturing phase brought the meticulously planned design to life. Utilising advanced CNC cutting technology, the ACM was precisely cut to the required dimensions. Skilled craftsmen then folded and welded the ACM, creating the desired shapes and structures.
To ensure secure attachment to the framework, aluminium brackets were fabricated.
For the intricate window details, printed and laminated vinyl was employed, adding a touch of authenticity. In addition, custom flanges were manufactured to facilitate the installation of pipework in the water target areas.
All manufacturing processes adhered to Butler’s commitment to exceptional quality and attention to detail.
Seamless Execution and Transformation
The installation phase marked the culmination of Butler’s meticulous planning and manufacturing efforts. The existing Fire Academy frontage was carefully stripped back, leaving behind the steel frame as the foundation.
Additional framework sections were then expertly fitted, providing the necessary support for the new cladding trays.
With precision and care, the cladding trays were mounted, followed by the attachment of the intricately designed detail trays, including doors and windows.
To ensure a watertight finish, colour-matched silicone sealant was applied to all joints, guaranteeing the frontage’s longevity and resilience. Flanges were installed in the target areas, allowing for the rear mounting of pipework.
The installation process showcased Butler’s expertise in executing complex projects with utmost professionalism.
A Striking, Timeless, and Engaging Frontage
Thanks to Butler’s unwavering commitment to excellence and creative problem-solving, Legoland’s Fire Academy has undergone a remarkable transformation. The new frontage exudes vibrancy, capturing the spirit and imagination of the Lego brand.
The durable ACM substrate ensures longevity and resistance to the constant water spray from the cannons, guaranteeing a lasting impact.
With its square and blocky edges, bright primary colours, and attention to detail, the frontage serves as an engaging and captivating visual element, enhancing the overall appeal of the attraction.
