St. Matthew’s & the Minster, Cheltenham
Thoughtful Signage for a Historic Landmark
When St. Matthew’s and the Minster in Cheltenham sought to reimagine their signage, they weren’t just looking for functional improvements. This historic church needed a solution that would enhance visibility, aid visitor navigation, and remain deeply respectful of the building’s architectural significance.
Butler was chosen to bring this vision to life, tasked with delivering signage that balanced modern needs with timeless design.
“Every element of the signage had to integrate harmoniously with the aesthetic of the structure”
Signage Solutions for a Historic Church
The Goals
Enhanced Visibility: The church’s name had to stand out clearly from all approaches, ensuring recognition for both visitors and passersby.
Visitor Navigation: Clear wayfinding was critical to guide guests seamlessly to the church’s entrance.
Architectural Sensitivity: The signage had to complement—not compete with—the historic stone façade of the church.
The Challenges
Working within the confines of a centuries-old building is no small feat. Every element of the signage had to integrate harmoniously with the aesthetic of the structure, a challenge complicated by the dual demands of durability and visibility.
The solution couldn’t be flashy or overpowering; instead, it needed to exude understated elegance while serving its functional purpose.
Our Process: Crafting the Perfect Balance
To address these challenges, we took a deliberate and collaborative approach:
Site Survey
We began with a meticulous survey of the site, ensuring every dimension, potential signage location, and attachment method was accounted for.
This early step was critical to ensure the signage would fit seamlessly with the unique architectural features of the church.
Photographic Mockups and Proofing
To align everyone’s vision, we prepared detailed proof documentation, including photographic mockups.
These visuals allowed the church to see exactly how the finished signage would look in its intended environment, ensuring design approval before moving to production.
Design and Fabrication
Materials and Colour Choices: We opted for wall-mounted sign trays in RAL 5008—a muted tone selected to harmonise with the historic stonework.
Protective Finishes: All signage was coated with an anti-graffiti matt laminate, guaranteeing a clean appearance and long-term durability.
Wayfinding Totem: To guide visitors effectively, we designed a stainless steel totem—a sleek and unobtrusive solution that adds functionality without detracting from the historic ambiance.
The Outcome: A Modern Solution with Timeless Appeal
The results speak for themselves.
Improved Visibility: The church’s name is now prominently displayed, making it identifiable from every side of the building.
Streamlined Navigation: Visitors can easily find their way to the entrance, thanks to the elegant yet practical stainless steel totem.
Architectural Harmony: The signage not only respects but enhances the building’s historic aesthetic. Thoughtful material and colour choices allow it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.
